Boiler Water Treatment

Boiler scale is caused by impurities being precipitated out of the water directly on heat transfer surfaces or by suspended matter in water settling out on the metal and becoming hard and adherent. Scale is formed by salts that have limited solubility but are not totally insoluble in boiler water.

The effects of scaling

If unchecked, scaling can begin to act as an insulator and reduce overall boiler efficiency. Corrosion can damage the internal workings of your boiler in two possible ways — general and pitting. General corrosion creates damage all over the system. Pitting creates localised corrosion of small parts of the boiler, such as in tubes. Boiler deposits can also cause plugging or partial obstruction of tubes and in some cases, scale build-up will cause a tube to overheat and potentially rupture. 

External Treatment

This involves the reduction or removal of impurities from water outside the boiler. There are many types of external treatments including softening, RO or Demin plants which can be used to develop a tailored solution.

Internal Treatment

This involves the conditioning of impurities within the boiler system. Internal treatment may be used alone or in conjunction with external treatment. D-Tech Chemicals purpose is to properly react with feed water hardness, condition sludge, scavenge oxygen and prevent boiler water foaming.

Cooling Tower Water Treatment

Scale deposits form when the solubility of dissolved minerals in cooling water is exceeded. Cooling towers function by evaporating a percentage of the water into the atmosphere. This water is pure and does not contain any of the dissolved minerals found in the makeup water. As the evaporation process continues, the scale-forming minerals concentrate in the water. If left unchecked, the solubility of the dissolved minerals is exceeded, resulting in precipitation of these salts as scale deposits.

What is microbiological fouling?

Microbiological fouling in cooling systems is the result of abundant growth of algae, fungi, and bacteria on surfaces. Open recirculating systems scrub microbes from the air and through evaporation, concentrate nutrients present in makeup water. As a result, microbe growth is more rapid. This accumulation and excessive growth of microorganisms is known as biofouling and can severely affect equipment leading to reduced performance and efficiency.

Closed Loop Water Treatment

Corrosion in a water transport system is the destruction of materials by chemical or electro-chemical (galvanic) reaction. Most corrosion processes are electro-chemical in nature, like a dry-cell battery. There is a flow of electricity between an area of the metal surface through the solution capable of conducting an electrical current. The eating away of the metal is at the point (anode) where the current enters the solution.

Raw Water Treatment

Raw water, depending on its source or quality, must be filtered, treated, or clarified before it can be used as makeup water in industrial and other utility processes. Clarification removes suspended and dissolved solids. Carbon filters are used to remove organics and chlorine.
